Subic: Ocean Adventure & Zoobic Safari and Convention Center

Subic has consistently been one of my most-viewed blog posts. I guess it is because this R&R destination keeps on improving itself. The AdSummit #ADSUMMITPH2016 is actually being held now at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center (SBECC) which was built for these huge ad industry events many advertising congresses ago.

The hotels have also mushroomed. The Mansion Garden Hotel where I am staying is one of the sought-after accommodations. Nice, clean, and most of all it is the closest hotel to Meat Plus, Subic’s most popular restaurant.

LAKWATSA

I have been to Subic a lot. In one of my trips, with my wife, my daughter and her nanny, plus my driver, I won so much in the casino that the cost of the entire trip was more than paid for. As I checked out, I was given a promo stub to fill up. Apparently, all guests were entitled to a raffle stub with a trip to Malaysia for 2 as grand prize. I won that, too. Tubong lugaw.

Ocean Adventure

This is my daughter’s favorite. Within the park, visitors can watch a seal show, a dolphin show, a whale show, and actually swim with the whales. And ride the whales. The handlers took my daughter from the shore to the raft in what I thought was not possible. The whales were beached on the shore, and my daughter was asked to ride it and hold on to the…

Masbate: Big City

I have always been wondering how others who have not been to Masbate think of this place. To confess, I also had images of my 1978 visit ( small, backward, very very provincial)  when I returned in 2013. Back in 1978 there was only one hotel, located near the pier, where hotel staff delivered to my room a pail of water when I took a bath.

MASBATE PROVINCE

Masbate Province has a booming population estimated at 950,000 in 2016. Made up of 20 municipalities and 1 city. Two big islands, Ticao and Burias form the province’s First District. Masbate City and the towns around it, including the province’s biggest town of Aroroy form District 2. The Third district includes the big towns of Placer and Cawayan, the two most populated towns after Masbate City, and Cataingan, the farthest town that is close enough to Iloilo.

THE CITY OF MASBATE

Masbate today looks like any provincial city. No, not like the premier cities of Cebu, Bacolod, Iloilo and Davao. It is the capital city of the province of Masbate, and the center of commerce. It is big and at the same time small. No traffic typical of the big cities. But has all the comforts – – it has malls and department stores, as well as the fast food joints that “define” how cities and towns have progressed. There are banks and other financial institutions that visitors will need to withdraw cash from ATM, or transfer/receive funds thru any of the “pera padala” centers.

Masbate is not just the Rodeo Capital of the Philippines. Within the city are tourist attractions, resorts, and resort hotels. Transport within the city is via tricycles and fare is only P8 per person.

The people are nice, and I have returned many times because of the many friends I have made. They have accompanied me to the different spots around Masbate and have had drinks with them in bars or in a “tambayan” at a friend’s carport.

Another friend says he returns to Masbate every year not just for the rodeo, but to be with friends we have made. I personally truly believe that visitors go to a place to see interesting sights for the first time, and return to be with friends they made. Masbatenos are truly a wonderful breed of people, contrary to the image created in people’s minds resulting from the past. This is a New Masbate. Come visit.

HOW TO GET TO MASBATE

Philippine Airlines flies daily to Masbate, leaving Terminal 3 at 5:05 am. Visitors will have one full day when they get to the city.

You can also travel by land. Buses leave Cubao and are loaded onto roll-on-roll-off boats between Pilar in Sorsogon and Masbate City such that visitors can travel direct from Quezon City to Masbate City. Travel time is from 16 to 18 hours. Visitors can also bring their cars and take the roro so they can travel around Masbate in their own cars.

SUTUKIL IN MASBATE

not a hole-in-the-wall

not a hole-in-the-wall

I first went to SUTUKIL in Masbate on my first rodeo visit. The place was recommended to me by a local, and so I went. I enjoyed the food immensely and so I brought in a big group two days later. After the sumptuous meal, our bill was only like P200 each, including tip.

I have since returned many times, and SUTUKIL has been a ritual. I must have lunch or dinner there every time I visit. The most wonderful thing is that their menu has not changed since then, and the price has been the same since 2013. In spite of the fact that the restaurant now looks very different from what was then like a hole in the wall.

The same menu board I first saw in 2013, and prices have not changed. This board has moved many times, as SUTUKIL was expanding little by little.

Today, a concrete structure stands, with a spacious function hall at the second floor. I learned that rooms for travelers will soon be made available on the third floor. Indeed, business is good. Why? Because they have kept to the positioning : excellent food at very low prices.

When I visited a few weeks back, the second floor function room, airconditioned, was booked for an event by a the local chapter of a worldwide civic group

Three weeks ago, I was just there with 2 friends. We had so much food that 5 diners could still be full. But because SUTUKIL dishes are very good and inexpensive, we ended up ordering more than what we could normally eat. If 5 people had our meal, the bill will be a little over P150 each. And that is essentially how each one of us paid as our share 3 years ago.

Sutukil Masbate is in Barangay Kinamaligan. If you don’t have private transport, tricycles can bring you there.

Bar none, the best restaurant in Masbate. Nothing fanct, but the best food, and best value – – meaning iNEXPENSIVE. I went to this restaurant last year and came back with a group of 30 friends this year. Then it was just called Castle Kaunan, with SUTUKIL taking second billing.

Going ahead of the story, the verdict was that they were all happy I introduced them to this restaurant. And why not?  The place is no-fuzz, nothing fancy. Just good food. The menu was varied.

Our order consisted of the delicious fish called “malasugue” done three ways. Sutukil means SUgba, TUla, and KILaw. Sugba is grilled malasugue, TUla is malasugue in broth, and KIlaw means making a part of the malasugue fish chopped raw and only done in vinegar and some spices. On top of the…

Sonya’s Garden near Tagaytay

At the onset, I say that Sonya’s Garden is near Tagaytay. Most people would think it is part of Tagaytay even as it is located in nearby Alfonso. What the heck, it is a prime Tagaytay destination !

Calaguas Nagaland Nov 1 2013 017

Calaguas Nagaland Nov 1 2013 016

Calaguas Nagaland Nov 1 2013 020

I started going to Sonya’s when it was nothing but a small structure with about 4 or 5 tables plus 2 or 3 tables on the loft. Guests then had to make a prior reservation, and one is actually privileged to secure a number to call from someone who has been there. In one of my earlier lunches, Sonya’s Garden had to (politely) decline a top matinee idol who came without prior reservation and, obviously, can not be given a table.  From that quaint set-up many moons ago, Sonya’s has become a complete destination, and can now house guests in their bed & breakfast.

Calaguas Nagaland Nov 1 2013 024

How did this place become hugely popular? I learned that in the beginning,  friends would have themselves invited by the gracious Sonya who served them delicious, healthy lunch. They came rather often that they started offering to pay for the food they ate as they did not want their friend/hostess to be bothered with her time and actually spend for the bother. Until these friends started bringing their friends, paying for their lunch. Thus, the business was born.

People go there for the salad

People go there for the salad

Again, in one of my earlier trips, a group of movie scribes were seated on the next table, together with a major actress then at the peak of her career. Apparently they came from a shoot. I chuckled (trying to hide this reaction) when I heard the movie scribes say “ayyy, puro damo naman pagkain dito, sana nag bulalo na lang tayo”. Indeed, the main draw of the place is their garden salad and Sonya’s secret dressing. Guests garnish the greens with fresh fruits like papaya, chico, langka, and other fruits in season. Plus shredded boiled eggs, olives, capers, and parmesan cheese. After the salad comes bread with dips of sun-dried tomato, pesto, anchovies, etc. The main course is pasta. Fresh dalandan juice is overflowing. Desserts include turon or camote. All these for something like P650 per person.

From its humble beginnings, Sonya’s guests are now directed to one of its many pavilions, each one actually a garden. On some days, I have seen two wedding receptions being held simultaneously. And I have also seen busloads of visitors. Even the parking area has more than quadrupled from the first time I set foot in this beautiful garden.

Calaguas Nagaland Nov 1 2013 012

Today, they also have a Panaderia (bakery), a country store (where I buy my supply of Sonya’s secret salad dressing and some home accents), a spa, and a bed & breakfast.

Calaguas Nagaland Nov 1 2013 025

On a recent visit, Sonya herself toured me around the B&B.

Sonya’s B&B is one of a kind. It will make the guests feel like they are in an affluent provincial setting. A group of friends can actually occupy a house and assign themselves to the rooms and beds. And converse in its living room. And be amused when they shower in the very unique toilet/shower set-ups, with stones as floor cover. Indeed, everything is unique and the experience will be something friends will talk about for a long time. See for yourself.

I am writing about this amazing place without any favors. I have paid for all my lunches and dinners on all my visits to Sonya’s. Probably why she decided to give me this tour.

Calaguas Nagaland Nov 1 2013 023

How much does it cost to stay at Sonya’s B&B? P3,000 per person on weekdays, P3,400 on weekends and holidays, P5,000 for single occupancy. These rates include early dinner or lunch, with breakfast. The B&B has 14 cottages and 18 rooms.

How do you get there? From Tagaytay, drive south past Mendez and on to Alfonso. When you see Tagaytay Royale Estates on your right, immediately turn right on the next road which is called Buck Estate. About 2 kilometers onward and you will see the Sonya’s sign.

Bahay Pastulan @ Good Shepherd Tagaytay

Many years ago, I discovered that I didn’t have to travel to Baguio to buy the famous ube jam that people queue for. There was a Good Shepherd Convent in what was then a rather obscure spot in Tagaytay.  Last year, I saw a structure being constructed and, when it was finished and landscaped, there stood an imposing Bahay Pastulan, the store where all the goodies made by the nuns and the poor families they employ to earn a decent living are being sold. I decided to check it out.

Bahay Pastulan is along the Sta Rosa – Tagaytay Road. It will be easy to spot as soon as one gets to Tagaytay – – it is something you will not miss on your right side, way before getting to the first Tagaytay traffic light.

this signage was photographed from Bahay Pastulan. Travelers won't miss the other side of this signage when traversing the road from Sta Rosa to Tagaytay.

What can one buy at Pastulan? Everything, it seems. Ube jam, polvoron, lengua de gato, angel cookies, alfajor, choco crinkles, snowballs, choco flakes, cashew brittle, oatmeal raisin chews, and peanut brittle.

Also gourmet tuyo, tawilis, crsipi pili, guyabano candy, sampaloc, tableya tsokolate, spicy pusit, and dulong. Yummy.

My favorite spot at Bahay Pastulan is the Take Out Area. I actually have my meals there, on what looks like cocktail tables that let you enjoy the scenery as you gorge on your food. Here, I have sampled their fresh lumpia ubod, fried lumpia, ube-langka turon, empanada, bibingka, arroz caldo, goto, coffee, halo halo, and fruit shakes. Always bringing home some.

UGU BIGYAN’s Pottery Garden & Restaurant

This shop is the pride of Tiaong.

First heard of Ugu Bigyan many years ago. Finally went there many years ag=fter, before I even started my travel blog. I thought this should go into my blog, too, so I went there once with my mom and my wife and my camera.

People go to this part of town for two things: well-crafted, one-of-a-kind pottery and excellent lunch. Lunch is via prior reservation. Well, other than those who want to learn the art of pottery from Ugu himself.

The property is interesting and clearly reflects the artist in the owner.

LUNCH GAZEBO

Lunch is served in the gazebo. No one complains about the cost per pax because everyone truly enjoys the dishes prepared by Ugu himself. Fish, other sea foods, meat dishes, vegetables. We paid then P6,000 for a group of ten, but we all ate like we were going to skip dinner and breakfast. Delicious and sumptuous. (I am not a food blogger and I refrained myself from taking food shots that may not do justice to the dishes, hahaha)

If lunch is not your reason to travel to Tiaong, then it must be his pottery. I bought myself a dozen exquisite coffee mugs that up to today are appreciated by my visitors. Here’s more things to buy:

HOW TO GET TO UGU BIGYAN’S POTTERY SHOP

  1. Take SLEX/ACTex  and exit at Sto Tomas, Batangas. Do not take the Lucena/Sto Tomas exit from Calamba – – go all the way to the SLEX extension called ACTex and exit to Sto Tomas from there.
  2. From Sto Tomas, drive on to Quezon province via the Laguna towns of Alaminos and San Pablo. You will be in Tiaong after San Pablo. There are roads via the town, and there are diversion roads. Take the shorter diversion roads keeping in mind the general direction of Tiaong, Quezon province.
  3. When you hit Tiaong, watch out for the Iglesia ni Cristo after  the Petron station on your right. After these two landmarks, turn left at the next street to your left. It is a small street with the sign Lusacan National High School at the corner.
  4. This will take you to the Alvarez Village. Turn left and you will see Ugu Bigyan’s brick house house ( the first photo above).

DAYTOUR : DRIVING SOUTH OF CEBU

This is a nice tour once you have done the usual Cebu tour of the Magellan’s Cross, Taoist Temple, the Sto Nino Shrine, the Gorordo Mansion, Tops, etc. Time to head south.

Hit the road going to Argao and Cagbalete and head back via Toledo, Balamban, and return to Cebu City via Nivel Hills – – where Marco Polo Hotel is.

You will be passing thru The cities and towns of Talisay, Minglanilla, San Fernando, Naga, Carcar, Sibonga, Argao, and then return via the coastal city of Toledo. You need to rent a car or hire a taxi for this wonderful tour. Hotel cars can be arranged for P5,000 for 8 hours, taxi’s can be negotiated for P3,000.00.

Heritage Town : Taal, Batangas

617150_426840737369011_1340206217_o

The town of Taal in Batangas is only 2 hours away from Manila, and the escape from the city to this heritage village can be really dramatic. Almost like night and day. Imagine leaving the skyscrapers and the humongous malls and then allowing yourself to travel back in time to something like 300 years ago. After a very short land travel.

178148_426841887368896_977051988_o

Taal was once the wealthiest town in Batangas and the grand mansions are a testament to its glorious and historic past. Many of the homes have been preserved and are open to visitors. A few have been transformed into cafes and restaurants, while some have opened their doors to visitors for bed and breakfast.

177638_426840820702336_901351450_o

The most noteworthy of the mansions are Casa Villavicencio, built as a wedding gift of a wealthy shipowner to his lady love who was belatedly acknowledged for her role in the Philippine revolution. There is also the Gregorio Agoncillo mansion, from where his uncle Felipe Agoncillo was born. The house is now famously known as the White House. There is Villa Tortuga where visitors can relive the past complete with period costumes. A visit to the Marcela Agoncillo house, probably he oldest of the famous houses, is so informative and is recommended for history buffs. The Apacible mansion allows visitors to see balisong actually being crafted. Across from the road is an old house where antique cameras and photographs are exhibited.

There are also the two most famous Taal churches – – Taal Basilica, the largest catholic place of worship in Asia. And the shrine of Our Lady of Caysasay, a charming church with an interesting wishing well at the rear section, a few steps up a hill thru the San Lorenzo Ruiz Steps.

Tampuhan Cafe was named after a painting of the great Juan Luna, a reproduction of which hangs on its walls. Owned by spouses Benj and Marj, this charming place offers meals as basic as tapsilog and pastas like carbonara and pesto tinapa. Lunch for three, with drinks, was less than P500.( I always pay full price for my meals and hotels so I can objectively review a place).

This is a cafe you would expect to find in a heritage town. There are the customary “batibot” chairs but what I found more interesting were the tables topped with glass using capiz windows painted white. Ingenious and very creative.

Upstairs are two rooms, with a third being furnished to receive guests. There is a common area for dining. All furniture from the rooms to the common areas make guests feel like they are traveling back in time. I did not stay for the night, but I learned that the rooms, airconditioned,  go for P850, breakfast included.  The toilet and baths are common for the guests, found at ground level.  One can say this is part of the heritage village experience – – – in my tours of the grand mansions, they did not have en suite bathrooms in those times.

Tampuhan Cafe is between Villa Tortuga and the Basilica. Parking can be arranged by the owners at the vacant lot at the rear. The cafe/B&B is easy to find along the main street of this heritage town.

Easy to find Tampuhan Cafe on the main road, with those paintings of people in period costumes on the wall. Right beside Villa Tortuga.

Lolo Claro’s Restaurant

I discovered this heavenly restaurant last year when a group of travel photography group I am a member of explored Maragondon last year. This morning, I took my mom to Maragondon just to have lunch in this faraway restaurant – – – driving all the way from Alabang. On the way to Maragondon, I saw a big sign that said Lolo Claro’s, and I skipped this restaurant located in what looked like a mini mall in Naic. Instead, I went all the way to Maragondon where the original restaurant is located.

This restaurant is found a little after the marker that welcomes visitors to Maragondon, on the left side of the national high-way. We got there a little past ten in the morning, intending to have a really early lunch. We found 3 other tables with guests who came even earlier than we did. I ordered the specialty of the house – – –  fried chicken. And a “small” platter of noodles – – – bijon guisado that serves four, as there were four in our party.

I normally take photos before we partake of the food. But my excitement made me forget to take photos earlier, and I just remembered I wanted to write about this restaurant. And so I took photos after we actually started eating. At Lolo Claros. the fried chicken is crispy and the white meat is so tender.

The bijon guisado was so good and we finished it all, even as I earlier thought we could not finish the whole serving.Image

We also ordered 4 bottles of mineral water. The total bill came to only P550.00.

Here’s what else they have on their menu.

If you happen to be traveling and find yourself in maragondon, do not miss this restaurant. I discovered this last year, and I came back soon. You would, too.

The restaurant is not even airconditioned, but it is clean and spacious.

Maragondon is a beautiful town. Check out their old church, and the Bonifacio Trial House. Or the beaches in nearby Ternate. Or maybe you may want to see the new Kaybiang Tunnel that connects Ternate to Batangas. Many many reasons to go to Maragondon. As for me, Lolo Claro’s is enough reason.

As a travel blogger, I pay for all my meals and accommodations. I do not promote places in exchange for any favor. You can see how I loved their chicken to “advertise” them for free. If you want to read more about Lolo Calro’s, you can go to their facebook page
